National Fitness Day is the most active day of the year and the day to celebrate the role that physical activity plays across the UK.
At Bridgewater Day Care Centre we recognise that not everybody has the confidence or opportunity to exercise at home, and that is why we always do our best to provide lots of opportunities within our beautiful purpose-built centre.
We are huge advocates of the importance of exercise at any age, but in later years it can really improve a person’s overall quality of life. Studies show that when we exercise, we gain a whole host of benefits, both physical and mental. Did you know that even simple exercises can improve balance, increase bone density, build strength and stamina? Not only that, but exercise has been shown to improve mood, improve self-confidence and promote restful sleep.
In the morning, we often do an ‘arm chair aerobics’ class, which involves some light stretching of our arms and legs, gets everyone moving but can be done in the comfort of a chair. This works well for us because it is a seated activity and all clients can partake should they wish.
Here are some photos taken recently of some of our wonderful Day Care clients taking part in the armchair exercises and most importantly having fun!
As little as 10 minutes of exercise a day can make us feel better, both physically and emotionally. And an activity that stimulates our brain can help us feel more alert. Being more active also helps keep bodies strong and flexible as they age, and can help alleviate conditions such a depression, stress, and anxiety. Maintaining physical activity, cognitive function and social interaction, all helps someone who has dementia to remain stimulated, feel valued and helpful.
For our Day Care Centre clients who are unable to attend at present, (except for those in self-isolation), at the moment, we’re all still allowed outside for exercise as long as we follow social distancing guidelines and stay two metres away from other people. Take this opportunity and get some fresh air – the mental health benefits of a walk outside can last up to seven hours! If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, use it for regular breaks to boost your mood. If you can’t get outside, try to open some windows for at least part of the day to encourage clean air to move through your room.
