Fun and Creative Activities at Bridgewater Day Care Centre

25th Mar 2022

We always manage to pack lots of fun and creative activities in at our Day Care Centre to cheer our lovely visitors up and bring a smile to their faces.

Bridgewater Day Care Centre offers a safe, friendly and relaxing place for adults with physical disabilities, older persons and those living with dementia to visit for the day and enjoy social interaction, cooked lunches, activities and lots more.

There is a range of ways that we encourage our clients to be active during their time spent at Bridgewater Day Care Centre in Golborne. Here is a snapshot of what we have been up to so far this year!

The Wisdom Tree

As we have such wise people who visit the Day Care Centre, we thought it was about time that we share some of their thoughts and created a ‘Wisdom Tree’ in January!

Our lovely clients made this and then added some of these inspirational quotes:

” Be Kind “ ( David )
” Do what makes you happy “ ( Joan )
“Go on holidays “( Marie)
“Help Others “ ( Mark )
” Look after children “ ( Arthur)
” Travel more “ ( Ruth)
“Don’t dwell on things “
” Do the best you can “
” Spend time with friends “

Birthday Cake in January

We celebrated the lovely Jenny’s birthday in January with some early valentine’s crafts and cake of course!

Lights, Action, Movie Fun!

We love a bit of drama and have lots of willing people ready to join in!

Armchair Aerobics

At Bridgewater Day Care Centre we recognise that not everybody has the confidence or opportunity to exercise at home, and that is why we always do our best to provide lots of opportunities within our beautiful purpose-built centre.

In the morning, we often do an ‘armchair aerobics’ class, which involves some light stretching of our arms and legs, gets everyone moving but can be done in the comfort of a chair. This works well for us because it is a seated activity and all clients can take part if they want to.

Arts & Crafts

Some arts and crafts offer sensory stimulation, something that is proven to be beneficial for those living with Dementia.

“These Hands have …”

We asked some of our clients to tell us some things that their hands have done in life. This is such a creative activity that we all enjoy and it’s so interesting to learn what our lovely clients are involved in or have got up to in the past.

Lots of the activities that we do can become more than the initial exercise. This one involved socialising, thinking, imagination, painting, cutting, and the placing of objects.

Games & Quizzes

Dementia activities and gentle exercise can help those who are living with dementia access a higher standard of life. By improving different lifestyle aspects such as self-confidence and improved self-esteem, mental cognition, physical capability and more.

Although dementia can make life more difficult, by regularly stimulating your mind, body and soul, those with dementia can better maintain independence for longer.

It’s all about concentration and skill when it comes to a competitive game of Dominoes!

We also love a game of Bingo! Especially when one of our clients is the Bingo Caller!

Valentine’s Week 2022

We enjoyed some dancing, lots of games and ” love” themed quizzes and not forgetting a delicious lunch during Valentine’s week this year.

Valentines Day may traditionally be known as a time for romance, but we think it’s a great opportunity for showing love & gratitude to all those we care about at the Day Care Centre as well as a time to get creative!

Shrove Tuesday & St David’s Day – 1st March 2022

We had double celebrations and enjoyed decorating mini pancakes in the morning and some beautiful crafts.

Music & Dancing

Music has proven to evoke emotional responses, as well as soothe and stimulate people mentally.

Kev, a family member of one of our team joined us at the beginning of March 2022, to play us all some tunes on his guitar and it was such a delight to have something different and allow our first external visitor into our centre! It really felt like the good old days.

St Patrick’s Day

We love the preparations for St Patrick’s Day and these amazing hats and beards certainly looked the part! We just want to continue creating new memories and we love seeing our visitors enjoying themselves and dressing up if they want to!

Dementia Care

A healthy diet, suitable exercise and cognitive stimulation have all been shown to have a positive impact on dementia symptoms and we work with our clients living with dementia to ensure they are getting the best possible care & stimulation whilst also meeting their personal choices and needs whilst visiting us at the Day Care Centre.

Meaningful social interaction can improve both mental and physical health and help to prevent or delay cognitive decline. Adult day care offers the chance to build new friendships and enjoy peer support.

Doing activities that focus on the five senses can be a good way to interact with someone with dementia and tap into memories. Sometimes we try to recreate childhood foods or do a taste test with favourite flavours- Baking apple pies are often popular!

Family carers often tell us that they feel guilty that they are even considering their own needs. However, you need to be fit and well, to be able to support others. The same is true for you in your caring role; self-care is paramount in being a carer.

Taking time off is vital for the health and well-being of the main carer for someone living with dementia and having time apart can help refresh and rejuvenate any relationship. Being able to recharge your batteries can leave you feeling more energetic, focused, and reinvigorated about your caregiving role.

We can also give you peace of mind that your loved one isn’t home alone but is in a supervised and safe environment.
