Living with Dementia

Over three-quarters of a million people in England live with dementia, a number that will grow exponentially.

Symptoms vary by type of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common type of dementia.
10 of the most common warning signs are shown below :
  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty performing familiar tasks
  • Problems with language
  • Disorientation to time and place
  • Poor or decreased judgement
  • Problems keeping track of things
  • Misplacing things
  • Changes in mood and behaviour
  • Challenges in understanding visual and spatial information
  • Withdrawal from work or social activities
If these signs are new, they may be a sign of dementia.
Dementia is not a part of normal ageing. If you think that these problems are affecting your daily life or the life of someone you know, or if you are concerned about the warning signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, it’s important to talk to your doctor.GPs will often be involved in the process of a diagnosis, either by making a diagnosis themselves or referring a person to specialist services.
Alzheimer’s Society can also provide the support you need via their website or Dementia Connect support line – https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-support/Tel: 0333 150 3456
You can also read advice from Dementia UK around getting a diagnosis here: https://www.dementiauk.org/…/getting-a-diagnosis-of…/
If you have any questions about the diagnosis process, Dementia UK’s Nurses offer advice and support. Contact their Helpline at 0800 888 6678 or helpline@dementiauk.org.
Spotting symptoms early can provide more time to develop a suitable and personalised care plan for your loved one.
Did you know that the Alzheimer’s Society provides up to 10 free publications and practical guides on dementia and relevant support that you can order directly to your home?

At Bridgewater Day Care Centre our Care and Support team are not only incredibly compassionate and understanding, but also highly trained and experienced in Dementia care. We specialise in supporting people with memory problems to age well and enjoy life.

When you have dementia, it’s important to try to keep doing things that you enjoy. Staying active and involved is important because it keeps you in touch, or reconnects you, with other people, and so can stop you from feeling lonely. Having people to talk to and spend time with can help you feel supported and understood.

Our day service enables older people to socialise with others while still receiving the care and support services that they need throughout the day. At the same time, the service offers carers a break from their day-to-day caring duties whilst knowing that their loved ones are in excellent hands.

We also offer a 2-course cooked lunch & snacks and drinks throughout the day.

Our service is currently available Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.
